Noise assessments, whatever the source, are usually undertaken in one of two ways; by reference to either an increase in noise level over the prevailing situation (e.g. BS4142: 1997, Method for rating industrial noise affecting mixed residential and industrial areas) or to an absolute internal or external noise limit at nearby noise sensitive buildings (e.g. ‘Community Noise’, prepared for the World Health Organisation, National Planning Framework 2012, BS 8233: 1999, Sound insulation and noise reduction for buildings – Code of practice, e.t.c.
